BFM; A Short Tale on Getting Ready
The House of Ezis crew was invited to attend the first annual Brisbane Fashion Month finale party held at Porsche Showroom in Brisbane. It was an extremely hectic week leading up to the event for us, finalising our Bridal and Formal orders for the year while at the same time trying to get our outfits sorted for the event, not to mention all the other side projects that we have on the go.
I decided that I needed a new look for the night, something summery, relaxed but dressy and not over the top, neutral and fresh. The inspiration was Hip Hop meets corporate, essentially a play on the dropped waist and crotch silhouette with an elongated shirt. Although I do love designing menswear, I find Brisbane men behind with fashion. We just see the same old boring silhouette in this city; button-up shirts tucked into pants. I realise that’s a big generalisation, but it is true, you either get the cowboy look, office hero or hipster with rolled pant cuffs, oh and let’s not forget the fitness and health obsession look.
These days aside from designing womens’ evening wear and bridal gowns, I only design for myself. My menswear line can wait, no rush, I’ll focus on the ladies who over the years seem to have really freed up their sense of dress and style. Anyway, back to me for now. The vision for my look for the night was a crispy made white button up shirt with a small squared collar, triple oversized and off the shoulder to allow the breeze to move through it to keep me cool on the night. This was teamed up with a natural coloured canvas drop crotch pant for extra comfort, finished with a pair of white Balenciaga designer sneakers and freshly bleached platinum blonde hair styled by long-time associate and collaborator Dimitri Fronis, hair extraordinaire, international hair teacher and master of natural hair extensions. The look was a definite stand-out on the night and the sneakers were very comfortable, no blisters.
Let me tell you about the shoes now. I drove everywhere to look for a unique pair of sneakers and I couldn’t believe it! What is going on in Brisbane! Men’s shoes and clothes are terrible, everywhere you go the clothing stores look more like a big sales bin. Myer, Pacific Fair, Harrods, Givenchy, were all options but just not quite right as I have such a fussy and particular taste. I ended up ordering a pair of Balenciaga sneakers from Barneys in New York, can you believe! How is it possible that between Brisbane and the Gold Coast I can’t find a pair of nice men’s shoes? Very odd. Not even one boutique with something nice to wear. I have to give credit to Pacific Fair though, it’s well beyond anything that we have here in Brisbane, it was an amazing shopping experience.
We have some known brands in Brisbane but the good stuff just isn’t on the shelves. It is as if the buyers are being conservative in their buying choices and us as consumers are just not getting their hands on the good things shown on runways or magazines. I understand that with the on-line phenomenon we can acquire any item from any brand we choose, but it’s so nice to be able to feel the material on your body and experience the physical nature of purchasing something you love. I look forward to when this city explores the vast array of styles and options the fashion industry has to offer.
